The Cosmos Community Centre Minibus Appeal reached a very happy conclusion in October 2008 with the delivery of the new bus by suppliers A M Philip Trucktech Ltd in Glenrothes. On hand to welcome the new arrival were representatives from the many local groups who generously donated over 40,000 to fund this important purchase as well as many minibus users.
The bus is used every weekday to transport children to the popular Cosmos After School Club. The new minibus has an electric tailgate lift and removable seats so can transport up to four wheelchairs. The vehicle has many new features and is easy for novice minibus drivers to handle so the Centre expect many more enquiries from community organisations wishing to hire the bus for their activities. Currently some 30 groups outside the Centre have benefited from this facility.
Chairman of the Cosmos Centre Gill Joy expressed her thanks to all those involved in the Appeal especially the many organisations and individuals who donated money and local businesses who provided prizes for raffles.
The Minibus Appeal has shown the power of community action and we are really privileged to have received such a positive response from the people of St Andrews. Its a good cause that everyone was very willing to support once they realised just how many people were using the minibus and the importance of such a facility for all community groups in the area. This lovely new bus is very visible proof that St Andrews community spirit is alive and well.
Gill also paid tribute to the appeal team who had worked so hard to keep the fundraising effort going over the past year and in particular to Carol Urquhart and Jim Mair who played a key role in liaising with the suppliers and sorting out all the technical specifications.
